I was at the Ceeps one night sitting in a booth with a few friends when a really good looking guy walked past. He sat at a booth close by, and looked over. As I said in yesterday’s post, I can’t pull off coy winking and prolonged eye contact can be just confusing. I looked at this fine man and smiled, nicely and normally. Surprisingly, he did not give me the ‘I wasn’t looking at you’ head shake. He smiled back. He asked me how I was, but realised that conversation was difficult when we were this far apart and the music was so loud. He gave me the signal to tell me he was coming over. Just as this beautiful man was about to approach, I heard a screech from across the bar. I tried to ignore it, but the voice became more distinct as it approached me. “OH MY GOD, COURTNEY HEFFERNAN! I HAVEN’T SEEN YOU IN YEARS!” What fresh hell?! I couldn’t deny my identity, because she had me on lock. The good looking guy looked at my inquisitively, and I shrugged in response. At least he knew my name now! He gave me the signal that he would walk a lap around the bar and come back. It turns out, I had known the girl who enthusiastically approached since elementary school. We had been in the same Brownie troop and it had been probably ten years since I had seen her. It was very cool to talk to her, but the conversation would not come to an end. Under any other circumstance I would not be eager to end a conversation, but in this case, I had someone else to talk to! Fifteen minutes passed and the conversation showed no signs of ending. The good looking guy came up to me – to us, as my former Brownie troop member was still there – and said, “Have a good night.” “And you too,” I replied sadly. The conversation came to an end shortly after, but he was gone, gone forever.

This story was supposed to convince you to take action when you’re interested in someone, in light of yesterday’s post on awkward eye contact, but now we know sometimes actions just lead to sadness and conversations with elementary school peers.
